Biomass Power

MNRE estimates a potential of 16,000 MW of biomass based power generation based on surplus agro-residues. In actual scenario, various other feedstocks such as industrial and forest wastes and also poultry wastes are used for various techno-economic reasons. This would mean a potential much higher than stated by the ministry.

Currently the installed capacity is 816.5 MW, only 5% of the potential exploited. During the 11th Plan period, the government of India plans to add another 500 MW of capacity through biomass in various states including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

In order to promote biomass based generation the government of India provides preferential tariffs, project financing through IREDA and various fiscal incentives.

Currently Greenko owns and operates 6 biomass power plants with a total installed capacity of 41.5 MW and has further acquired licenses for 47 MW. The licenses of biomass based power plants are in the states of Punjab, Chhattisgarh & Karnataka.
